Summary of the talk: This presentation provided a scientific view of the importance of mindfulness in an integrative approach to health. Dr. Dan Siegel discussed the neurological basis of behavior, the mind, the brain and human relationships and put forth a method of expanding the sense of identity so as to include other people, species and the planet. He explained how the notion of “health” can be a means of linking individual, community and planetary well-being. Dr. Siegel described how mindfulness techniques stimulate the growth of self-regulating, integrative fibers of the brain to enable enhanced empathy, self-understanding, emotion regulation and even improved physiological functions - thus facilitating transformation into better states of health for both clinicians and patients.
